How to deal with persons with dementia? Not only for you and me, but also for caregivers not easy to understand how that feels. Through Virtual Reality glasses, trainees can experience life through the eyes of a person with dementia so that they are in care with different intentions. Apart from the idea, training centre Hivset had no executive partner. By taking Soulmade under their wing, their idea became a reality.

Dealing with confused behaviour

The aim: to offer more insight into dealing with people with dementia. We took that “insight” quite literally. Virtual Reality puts you in the shoes of a demented man or woman staying in a residential care home. A voice of thought, spoken by Jos Dom and Sien Eggers, ensures maximum empathy. Numerous stimuli, such as chatter and unfamiliar interns, create confused behaviour that eventually leads to a tantrum.

The Gienie dashboard makes it didactically strong. This compelling case study shows some response options, from gentle to forceful. The trainee can choose their own counter-reaction (single). Gienie’s livestream feature offers a nice added value to this project. Both the teacher and other trainees can follow the experience and manage reactions via a laptop connected to the VR glasses. This also allows several trainees to be controlled simultaneously by the instructor (shared).

Hivset Speaking.

"From our vision, to develop our second VR project, we ended up with Soulmade. And this turned out to be a hit! With great commitment, creativity and professionalism, they worked with us, developing the new VR experience 'Aggression in people with dementia'. And does such an experiential VR experience work? As one of the now 160 participants testified: Wow, this comes in! It touched me in heart and head. I can only do something with this. Speaking of a compliment."
